Laminated lumber, which is one type of laminated material made by combining multiple pieces of wood, is made by gluing together sawn boards or small pieces of timber.

When multiple peaks and valleys are made in the joint to create a zigzag shape and then joined together facing each other, it is called a "finger joint" because it resembles the fingers of two hands clasped together. Finger joints can increase the joint surface area and skillfully combine the grain direction of the wood, making it possible to create strong laminated lumber.
